The River Kwai Bridge Week Festival has long been one of the most meaningful annual events in Kanchanaburi. Every year, it brings together history, culture, community, and remembrance through performances and activities held around the famous River Kwai Bridge and the Thai–Burma Railway.

In 2025, the festival carries an even deeper meaning as the province joins the nation in mourning Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother. This year’s theme, “The Light of Remembrance and Eternal Loyalty” reflects the love, respect, and gratitude Thai people hold for Her Majesty.

What Is the River Kwai Bridge Festival?

The River Kwai Bridge Festival 2025 is more than a provincial festival — it’s a bittersweet tribute to the past. In commemoration of the construction of the infamous Thai-Burma Railway during World War II, the festival is a memorial to those lives lost in light, sound, and community remembrance.

For many visitors, the festival is not only a chance to learn about the history of the bridge and the Thai–Burma Railway, but also a special time to connect with local people. However, Kanchanaburi itself is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year. It offers natural beauty, quiet riverside scenery, and a more relaxed pace of life compared to busy cities. Tourists coming for the festival can also explore many attractions nearby. The Erawan Waterfall, Sai Yok National Park, Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre, and the Death Railway viewpoints are only a short drive away.

Event Highlights and What to Expect

This year’s festival will run from 27 November to 7 December 2025 at 2 main locations:

• The River Kwai Bridge
• The area beside the Provincial Administrative Organization.

The atmosphere will blend remembrance, culture, local creativity, and historical appreciation. Here is a clear update of activities, including what continues as planned and what has been adjusted due to the national mourning period.

Light-and-Sound Performance

The main highlight of the festival is the annual light-and-sound performance that tells the story of the bridge and the province’s history.

• Time: One show per day at 19:00
• Duration: Approximately 40 minutes
• Admission: Free for everyone
• Additional Show: Every Saturday, an extra performance will be held at 20:30

Other Highlights include:

• Local dessert and flavored food stalls
• Thai Red Cross booths, handicraft fairs and charity lotteries
• Floral parade: “A Procession in Remembrance of the Mother of the Land.”
• Cultural performances, international market, and retro market
• Singing competitions on the theme of remembrance
• 2 pageants competitions: Little Miss Kanchanaburi and Miss Peace Kanchanaburi 

Fireworks Show After Every Performance

After the light-and-sound show, there will be a short fireworks display dedicated to the memory of Her Majesty. The fireworks are elegant and respectful in style, using soft tones and patterns that symbolize compassion and eternal remembrance.

Notice of Cancellation: 4–5 December 2025

On 4 and 5 December, the light-and-sound shows will be cancelled because the steam locomotive used in the show is assigned to a royal-related duty. However, special cultural performances will be held instead, including: Khon performance (Thai classical masked dance) presented in front of the royal portrait Traditional outdoor theater performance of “Sang Thong”, a beloved Thai folk tale

Event Schedule and Location Details

Every year, the main stage is set at the River Kwai Bridge, with additional festivities at Klip Bua Stadium in Mueang District. Nightly performances are usually around 7-8.30 p.m. on weekends and 8.00 p.m. on weekdays. Any changes to this year's schedule will be announced by the Kanchanaburi provincial office later.

It’s easy to get to Kanchanaburi: catch a picturesque bus or train from Bangkok. Book accommodation ahead of time since the riverside hotels go quickly. Moreover, visitors are asked to keep a few simple guidelines in mind as Thailand is in a period of mourning for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother:

• Dress respectfully—clothes in neutral, soft, or dark tones are appreciated at major events.
• Avoid loud celebrations—while the festival is friendly and enjoyable, please be mindful of the atmosphere.
• Show respect during ceremonies—there may be short moments of silence, royal tributes, or cultural performances linked to remembrance.
• Be patient and understanding—some activities may be adjusted or changed to align with national protocols.
