This year marks the 100th anniversary of Lumphini Park, one of Bangkok’s most historic and public parks. To celebrate, the city government is organizing a week-long event from 20 to 25 November 2025, combining a royal tribute and a festive public gathering.
Lumphini Park, which opened in 1925, was created under King Rama VI’s reign and has since become a central spot for exercise, relaxation, and culture in the heart of Bangkok.
The centennial celebration gives both locals and tourists a chance to revisit this iconic green space with new eyes and with respect for its historical roots.
Lumphini Park: The Iconic Green Space in Bangkok
The event has a strong royal and cultural character. As part of the program, there will be a tribute ceremony to King Rama VI at his statue, acknowledging his role in creating the park. At the pavilion in the park, organizers will screen a special video about the park’s history “100 Years of Lumphini Park” and present a performance of Mat Nah Patha, a dance-drama based on one of Rama VI’s own literary works.
Elsewhere in the park, visitors will find an exhibition called “Light Garden,” cultural displays, ballroom dancing, and a multimedia projection show on the clock tower using mapping technology to create a beautiful light and sound experience. However, this event is not just about celebrations: it's deeply linked to a major renovation project. The BMA is investing in a two-phase renovation.
- Phase 1 covers upgrading the main roadways in the park, installing five underground water tanks to mitigate flooding, and building a multipurpose “100 Years” building.
- Phase 2 will further develop the rest of the park: more green zones, social spaces, artistic and environmental areas. All are designed to support public engagement and to preserve history.
Why the Event Matter!
This event can be a bridge between the past and future. By paying homage to King Rama VI, the city honors the vision that gave Bangkok one of its first major parks.
By renovating the park, the city shows that it cares about preserving historical value and adapting to modern needs. For locals, it’s a meaningful chance to revisit Lumphini Park and see its renewed face. For visitors, it’s a rare window into the cultural and historical heartbeat of Bangkok. Most importantly, the 100-Year Anniversary of Lumphini Park is about building a legacy: a green public space that belongs to the people, grows with the city, and will continue to serve future generations.
