Bangkok is not just about tall buildings, temples, rivers, or trendy cafés. The city is full of history and local culture.

Over the past few years, Bangkok has revitalized many famous cultural spots like Bang Lamphu, known for its old shops and street food; Charoen Krung, with its Thai-Chinese heritage; and Nang Loeng, famous for its market and classic charm. But now, more travelers are starting to explore 3 lesser-known yet equally charming old neighborhoods: Talat Noi, Thanon Song Wat, and Phraeng Phuthon.

Let’s see why they are worth a visit.

Talat Noi: A Historic Chinese Community

Talat Noi is one of the oldest and most well-known communities, located near Yaowarat along the Chao Phraya River. It was established over 200 years ago and was once an important trading port. As you walk around, you’ll find Talat Noi’s iconic street art that reflects the area’s rich and diverse history. Murals and graffiti turn every corner into an open-air gallery. Many people love coming here to enjoy the riverside walk and take beautiful photos with the colorful walls and old-style buildings.

Food lovers will enjoy Talat Noi since there are more than 20 original restaurants that have been open for over 50 years. Kuan Siew Kee, Daeng Racha Hoi Tod, and Chong Kee Moo Satay are always locals’ recommendations.

Before heading out, you can make a quick wish at Hon Wong Kung Shrine, one of the oldest Chinese shrines in Bangkok where locals come here for luck and prosperity, so you should try!

Thanon Song Wat: The Legends Road of Thai Tycoons

Thanon Song Wat is named after Phraya Song Wat, a noble during King Rama V’s time. This road connects Yaowarat and Sampeng and used to be a busy trade route. Because of its unique vibe, Time Out Magazine listed it as one of the 40 Coolest Neighborhoods in the World 2023.

This street is lined with old buildings that still keep their original look, blending Chinese and colonial styles. Today, Thanon Song Wat is also known for its artsy vibe. You can find lots of graffiti, street art, small galleries, creative shops, and stylish cafés. So, this spot is a great place to walk around, enjoy the local culture, and take nice photos.

Phraeng Phuthon: The Spirit of Rattanakosin

Phraeng Phuthon is located near Khlong Lod, between Thanon Tanao and Thanon Atsadang. It is one of 3 areas known as Sam Phraeng. During King Rama V’s era, it was home to top government officials. Later, it became a famous night market, and now it’s been redesigned into a public park called Lan Phutharet for the local community.

The area is now a well-maintained cultural spot. You’ll find beautifully restored buildings and many local restaurants hidden in the alleys. Highlights include Phraeng Phuthon Noodles, Udom Phochana (famous for beef stew and curry), and the unique pork brain noodle soup. There’s also Kim Thong beef noodles and Chikacha, a charming coffee shop that’s been around for 3 generations.
